Rolando was born and raised in Puerto Rico, the youngest of three siblings who each pursued unique career paths, ranging from television work to genetics research. Rolando found his passion in fashion design and merchandising, earning an associate’s degree in the field. He was on his way to majoring in Civil Engineering when Hurricane Maria struck in 2017, devastating the island and leaving his home and the pageant business he’d started in ruins.
At the time, his brother was working in genetics at Michigan State University. He suggested to Rolando that he move to the state to rebuild his life. A short time later, Rolando packed up his possessions and made the journey north to Michigan, the state he’s called home (following a brief stint in Wisconsin) ever since.
While searching for work, Rolando came across a job posting for Peckham’s manufacturing division, which produces military uniforms. Given his fashion design background, he decided to apply. However, his career took an unexpected turn when he was invited to interview for a bilingual customer service representative (CSR) position at Peckham Contact Center Solution’s facility in Lansing. Rolando embraced the opportunity, seeing it as a means to fulfill his lifelong desire to help others.
Rolando quickly distinguished himself in his CSR position by improving the translation process for Spanish-language knowledge articles, an effort that made them more effective for his peers. This initiative led to his involvement in Peckham’s mentoring program, where he trained new CSRs to achieve excellence in their roles.
Rolando’s drive and adaptability earned him a promotion to Technical Service Representative (TSR), a position which allowed him to expand his skills while continuing to support others. Today, he serves as a bilingual night-shift supervisor for the call center, a role that reflects his steady career growth and leadership.
One of Rolando’s favorite aspects of working at Peckham is the sense of community he has built with colleagues, whom he considers family. While he misses the closeness of his relatives in Puerto Rico, he feels at home in an environment that values individuality and encourages people to bring their authentic selves to work.
Looking ahead, Rolando plans to leverage programs like the Higher Education Credit Attainment Program, , which allows him to earn college credits while working full-time, as well continuing his mastery of Excel and participate in personal development courses. He is confident that these opportunities, combined with his drive, will help him achieve his goal of earning a Business Management degree to further his career and continue fostering community connections.
Outside of work, Rolando’s passion for baking provides a seemingly never-ending supply of treats that delight and tickle the taste buds of his colleagues. A particular favorite is his famous chocolate flan. For him, cooking is a way to express gratitude and strengthen bonds with others.
Rolando credits his success to Peckham’s support and opportunities, as well as his unwavering dedication to doing his best in any role. Inspired by his mother’s motto to “always honor the job,” he strives for excellence in everything he does.
