PECKHAM IN ACTION

LANSING, MI- Peckham, in partnership with Lansing Parks and Recreation will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of an accessible swing installation at Beacon Park on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at 4 p.m.  

The ceremony commemorates a long-standing project with members of the Peckham Self Advocacy Team (PSAT), Lansing City Council and the Lansing Parks and Recreation department to create more inclusive community spaces where children who use wheelchairs can access and play. The swing, funded in part by the Peckham Community Partnership Foundation, was installed at Beacon Park last Fall.  

“We are so proud of our self-advocacy team for their diligence and commitment to ensuring that our local communities are inclusive of individuals with disabilities,” said Jo Sinha, Peckham President & CEO. “Their concerted efforts to use their voice and take action, has provided more integrated recreational opportunities for children with disabilities.”       

Peckham Self-Advocacy teams (PSAT) advocate and educate at the local, state and federal level on policies that affect persons with disabilities. The teams use a strategic, diplomatic, non-partisan approach in its interactions with elected officials. PSAT promotes self-determination, supports leadership development, peer recognition and morale-boosting activities. Members of the team engage in community service efforts and share and promote community resources available to people with disabilities. 

Peckham is a nonprofit vocational rehabilitation organization that provides paid job training opportunities for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. For 45 years, Peckham has provided jobs and job skills training to thousands of individuals with barriers through five different business lines throughout Michigan, and also has operations in Phoenix, Arizona and London, Kentucky.
